Heading to Tornado Alley
Saturday, May 25, 2019 8:31 PM
Want to find tornadoes? Get your mobile radar truck into the thick of things and gather some data? Yes! Of course! But how do storm-chasing scientists decide where to go?
That was the situation Friday afternoon in West Lafayette, Indiana. The meteorologists in charge of leading students and chasers toward the areas of most likely severe weather made their case.
Purdue University research meteorologist Dan Dawson (left) presented the prediction data. Models of where severe weather is most likely to occur 24, 48, and 96 hours in the future.
What was the verdict? Go west! Kansas, in particular, and maybe onto Oklahoma. So we’re off, heading towards Topeka, Kansas, hoping to arrive Saturday afternoon before severe weather kicks in.
Stay tuned!
